WE THE WEEDS

A series of collaborative, site-based, social and botanical engagement projects focused on spontaneous urban plants (“weeds”) lead by artist/educator Kaitlin Pomerantz and artist/botanist Zya S. Levy from 2013-2017.

WTW projects positioned plants as highly intelligent itinerant storytellers and culture-bearers, dispelling connotative markers like “blight” and “invasiveness” and dissolving distinctions between urban space and “nature”.

WTW blossomed in Philadelphia at the dawn of a major building boom and documents a bygone landscape of teeming ruderal ecologies (“vacant” lots that were never vacant at all). WTW received support from the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, Asian Arts Initiative, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Hidden City and more. WTW then migrated West with projects in the Sierra Nevada Mountains (supported by Cabin Time) and Los Angeles (via the Huntington Museum).

A collaboration without definitive end, WTW lays dormant for now.
